Buying and Selling Water Rights

Water allocation has a separate title from a land title and can be bought and sold independently, just like land. This enables water allocation holders to buy water to expand their operations or sell water they don’t need.

All water trading prices are set by the market. You do not need to be a landholder to buy a water allocation, but the movement of water is restricted by trading rules.

To ensure you are fully abiding by the regulations on the buying and selling of water rights in Queensland, we encourage you to contact our experienced rural law team at Kelly Legal.

We can ensure you are following correct guidelines and registrations, whether you’re trading, leasing, sharing or permanently transferring ownership of water allocation titles.  Call 4911 0500 today for personalised and professional legal advice.
